DESPITE MECHANICAL ISSUES, THE ALL-AMERICAN DRIVER CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS TAKE FIRST AND SECOND PLACE IN SATURDAY'S USAC RACE
DENVER, NC (4/30/2007) - Mechanical issues couldn't keep the two All-American Driver Challenge (AADC) Champions from taking the top two spots in the second race of the 2007 USAC Carolina Midget Series season on Saturday at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway, Virginia.
Bradley Riethmeyer and Tanner Swanson, the 2006 and 2007 Champions of the AADC, respectively, are currently #1 and #2 in points for the Series. Riethmeyer battled an ill-handling car but was able to hold onto first place. "We made a gear change in practice and that picked it up a bit," said Riethmeyer. "But it got a little free in the feature and I had to move my line." A head gasket in Swason's car let go around lap seven spraying oil up over the hood and onto Swanson's helmet - forcing him to pull tear-offs from his face shield nearly every lap in order for him to see. As if combating oil wasn't enough, Swanson also had to adjust to changing conditions of the car. "The car got a little tight toward the middle of the race, but we did a good job and were able to hold onto second place," said Swanson.
In the season opener last weekend, Riethmeyer and Swanson came out strong finishing in first and second place. This weekend, Riethmeyer again sat on the pole and then went on to lead every lap of the 35-lap feature. Swanson finished a close second. Both drivers will be back on the track on May 5th at Orange County Speedway in Durham, NC, when Swanson will again race against his teammate for the win.
Riethmeyer, a Texas A&M senior who hails from Hutto, Texas, won the inaugural year of the All-American Driver Challenge (AADC) in 2006 and won a fully paid contract to drive in the 2006 USAC Carolina/Virginia Midget Series. He made an immediate impact on the Midget Series in by winning the first event of the season in April 2006. He went on to claim two victories in ten races and finished third in the final points standing last year.
Swanson is a sophomore at Kingsburg High School where he maintains a 4.0 GPA, is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America and is also on his high school basketball, tennis and cross country teams. He began racing at the tender age of 10 running in the Junior Sprint Class. His racing accomplishments include the 2006 Modified Super Toyota Championship and the Rookie of the Year award as well as the Plaza Park Raceway Multi 600 Championship.
The AADC is a driver search and competition that is geared toward fostering the best up-and-coming talent, ages 15-23, for a future career in a professional American racing series. The AADC is presented by Calico Coatings and other participating sponsors and endorsed by USAC. For more information on the AADC, please visit www.allamericandriver.com or call 1.800.861.6491.
The USAC Ford Focus Midget Series, presented by the Richard Petty Driving Experience, started in Bakersfield, California in 2002 with only six cars. Today, it's one of the fastest growing classes in racing with nearly 200 cars in contention and over 220 races conducted. Many current USAC drivers consider the series as "the front porch to the Daytona 500." USAC has been the training ground that has launched the careers of such drivers as Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart. The series currently has 17 races scheduled at tracks in Virginia, Kentucky and the Carolinas.
